Stump Removal Factsheet

When we have removed a tree from your property you will be left with the stump and this sheet may assist in your decision whether and how to remove it. You will have 4 options all with their benefits and drawbacks. Please consider each option carefully with our tree surgeon when making a decision regarding the stump. Please make our tree surgeon aware of any underground pipes and cables on your property  that could affect any tree work.

Leaving the stump in situ

When the tree has been felled, a stump will remain cut to the lowest possible level

Benefits

·         The cheapest option as there is no cost involved.

·         No disruption to surrounding soil and garden

Drawbacks

·         Stump may be in the wrong position if you are considering landscaping or building an extension

·         May not look particularly attractive and could be a hazard to trip over

Poisoning

This is suitable for trees that are likely to re-grow from the stump or roots remaining in the ground e.g. Willow, Poplar, Sycamore. Our tree surgeon would apply a widely available herbicide, which is safe to use around pets and children, that will help prevent re-growth from stump and roots.

Benefits

·         Second cheapest option

Drawbacks

·         The stump will remain but re-growth should be minimal

Manual removal of stump

The stump and any visible roots would be removed by digging it out manually

Benefits

·         If this is the only feasible option e.g. because of  pipes & cables nearby or there is no room for access for a stump grinding machine to enter the property or if the stump is too close to an obstruction for the machinery to work.. (Remember, fence panels can often be removed to allow access into your property)

Drawbacks

·         The most expensive option as it is the most labour intensive

Stump Grinding

If a stump is to be removed this is the most popular option taken by our Customers. Our quotations include the mechanical removal of the main bowl of the stump and backfilling the hole that is left with the soil and grindings that have come from the stump. Debris from the stump grinding often appears more than is envisioned and to start with the soil and grindings will be heaped above the hole. In time the grindings will rot way and the soil will settle. If you do not wish to wait for the debris to settle you may wish to spread it over the garden as it mulches down to make a good soil improver. Some Customers feel they would prefer the excess grindings to be taken away. This will incur additional cost to the stump grinding quotation. Please also discuss with our tree surgeon the possibilities of remaining roots which could hamper any building work or landscaping projects .When using the stump grinding machine, guards are placed around the equipment to help prevent debris from being thrown from the worksite.

Benefits

·         Quickest and most cost effective method of stump removal

Drawbacks

·         May not be possible if access is not wide enough for a stump grinder to enter the property

·         The proximity of underground pipes & cables or other immovable objects may prevent or hamper operations

·         Paving slabs may need to be removed so the stump grinder has access to the stump
